Where We’d Send You to Eat

The immediate lakeshore is casual, and it is taverns.

That is the honest summary, and most of the time it is exactly what you want: you have been outside all day, you are still slightly sunburned, and nobody wants to change into anything. When it is not what you want, the answer is twenty minutes north, and we will get to that.

You will also have a full kitchen, and a good number of people will barely leave it. There is something about a lake house that makes people cook properly for the first time in months. This is for the nights you would rather be fed, roughly in the order we would send you.

D’Boathaus, because of where it is

The local favorite and the one we recommend most often, largely for the address: right on Greenwood Lake. There is a specific pleasure in ending a day spent on the water by eating beside it.

The menu is easy and generous and the service is very good. It is the natural Friday-arrival dinner and the natural last-night dinner, and there is no reason not to do both.

The Farm at Glenwood Mountain is not a restaurant

Understand that before you build an evening around it. You cannot walk in. The farm runs ticketed farm-to-table dinners on set dates — in the organic herb garden, in a restored 1930s dairy barn, or at the chef’s table, depending on the season and the weather — and when one is on, it is the best meal in this area by a distance.

Which makes it something to plan around rather than fall back on. Look at what is scheduled before you travel and book early, because the dinners are small and they sell out.

The farm market needs no planning at all: Friday mornings and both weekend afternoons, and well worth a stop for the grass-fed beef, the pork and the produce if you are cooking at the house.

The Breezy has the best view and we will not oversell the food

Up at the New York end, on the water since 1967, and the deck is the best view on this lake. Not arguably. Seafood, American, and some proper old German cooking that has outlasted the fashion for it.

Opinions on the kitchen vary and the service can wander. Go for an early drink and the light on the water rather than for a special dinner, and go between April and the autumn, because it closes over the winter.

The Greenwood Tavern is new, and we are saying so

It opened around Memorial Day 2026 on the Greenwood Lake Turnpike, a few doors along from us, and it is the first genuinely new thing on this stretch of road in some time: a lakeside room with a comfort-food menu done properly, cocktails built to match, brunch, and live music at weekends.

We are recommending it early rather than proven. The track record is a single season, and we would rather say that than let you find it out. It is also the closest table to the house by a distance, and as a lake-season place it may keep shorter hours in winter, so call before you walk down.

West Milford Thai is the one for the night nobody can decide

Everyone has been outside all day, nobody wants to cook, and the group has lost the will to make a decision. Family-run, properly spiced, and equally happy to feed you at a table or hand it over in a bag.

One thing before you rely on it: they are closed on Mondays.

Warwick has more good cooking in four streets than the whole lake

This is the twenty minutes north. For an anniversary, a last night, or somebody visiting you would like to impress, it is not a close call.

The Grange is the one to build an evening around. Farm-to-table in the literal sense rather than the menu-copy sense, in a 112-year-old former post office, and the room seats nineteen people. Nineteen. Book well ahead, by telephone, and know that a party of six or more is asked for a deposit — which is not unreasonable when you are taking a third of the restaurant.

For a group of eight without that much notice, The Fed of Warwick, Prime 36 and Bone Yard Cantina all take online bookings and will seat you without drama. Grappa is the phone-booking Italian and a reliable choice. Eddie’s Roadhouse is a lovely gastropub and a small room, so call first — and note it is shut on Mondays, which is true of a surprising number of good things around here.

Two mornings in, somebody always wants a bakery

You will have coffee at the house, and for most people that settles it. Then it does not.

Utopia Deli on the Warwick Turnpike is the genuinely local answer and the closest: breakfast sandwiches, coffee, subs, no ceremony. Five minutes further into West Milford, The Daily Bean does the best coffee in the area by some margin and Dottie Audrey’s is the bakery worth the detour, both with somewhere to sit. Pop’s Bagelry covers the bagel run. Vacca’s in Hewitt delivers pizza to the door if nobody wants to move at all.

Bellvale Farms Creamery is not dinner and is not optional

A multi-generation dairy farm scooping homemade ice cream over a hilltop view of the Warwick Valley, and the closest thing this area has to a civic institution.

Go at sunset. Everyone else will have had the same idea, which is part of it — the line is half the experience and the view does not care how long you stand in it.

One caveat that matters if you are coming in the cold: the creamery is seasonal, roughly April to October. Out of season it is shut, and the hill is just a hill.

If you cook once, cook Saturday

And shop on the way up rather than after you arrive. The orchards and farm markets of the Warwick Valley are fifteen minutes away and are a far better argument for cooking than any supermarket.

Buy more apples than you think you need. They travel home well, and they are the part of the weekend that lasts into the following week.
